Others stick nothing in there and either rely on educated thumbs or left side cast controls. You tighten it down until the lure slowly falls to the ground from the tip when in free spool. Some companies do put washers and such in there to make the right side a true cast control that can be adjusted for the weight of the lure. Too loose and you can get some "rattle" when casting which will hurt distance.

mono line isnt cutting it (breaks), and so far, my experience is that with heavier mono line, I lose casting distance with spincast reels. Too tight and it becomes a poor man's cast control with poor results. I do need some moderately strong pulling power, as the whole idea of acquiring the Ambassadeur 5000 was to be able to pull 30-40 lb. The knob on the right is used until there is just a tiny bit of play side to side of the spool. I'm assuming I would tightened the knob on the right until there is no play, then adjust the spool tension with the knob on the left sideplate and finally readjust the knob on the right sideplate, if needed, to make sure the spool is centered so the line lay evenly.

Now I have to make sure it is set up properly, so what is the proper procedure for centering the spool with the casting cap adjustment on the right ? I have finished rebuilding my 5000 after taken it all apart to clean and lube it.
